Samsung Leak Reveals Surprise Price Drop For New Foldable Phone
According to a new report, Samsung plans to launch a mid-range foldable phone at a significantly cheaper price than its current lineup.
According to supply chain sources who spoke to research firm TrendForce, the new foldable device will go on sale in 2024. Samsung's stated goal is to "further lower price barriers and make foldable phones more accessible." for a broader range of consumers," according to the company's report.
This was confirmed by tipster @Tech_Reve on Twitter/X, who said that Samsung is targeting a price between $400 and $500 for this new flexible phone.
Currently, the Z Flip 5 and Fold 5 cost $999 and $1,799.99 respectively. A $500 budget version of one of these models would represent a big price drop, making it cheaper than the recently released mid-range Galaxy S23 FE.
The expensive parts of a foldable phone include the complex mechanics of making a sturdy hinge and the ultra-thin, durable glass for the screen. Both are obstacles to producing cheap foldable phones, but another big problem is software.
Due to their multifunctional capabilities, foldable phones offer a different user experience and interface than traditional slate-style phones. Done right, the folding experience is the best a smartphone can offer. When it's buggy and unintuitive, like the first version of the Samsung Fold, it ruins the experience.
There's no point in making a cheap foldable phone if the software isn't as impressive as the hardware. In an interview with Tom's Guide earlier this year, Samsung's vice president of mobile product marketing, Drew Blackard, said as much.
"Foldable products will become cheaper sooner or later. This year we've really focused on solving the pain points we've identified with our current foldable user base. We're focused on improving the experience. Of course, as technology advances evolves over time, we innovate. "We will continue and hopefully lower prices in the future."
Trendforce and Tech Reve did not provide additional information about the budget foldable device. However, one of the biggest challenges is how to achieve cost savings. The Fold 5 and the Flip 5 already use mid-range cameras to keep the price down, so a budget foldable device would have to drop the price to get a lower price, or the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 would finally have a camera .the flagship to compete with the Galaxy S24.
The most likely outcome is that Samsung will launch a budget version of the company's already cheapest foldable phone, the Flip 5. Similar foldable phones like the Motorola Razr have dropped in price to over the years. , may be the least risky form factor Samsung tests
