Man Barricades Inside Hermosa Beach House Set On Fire
A six-hour standoff and shootout in Hermosa Beach ended when a SWAT team entered a home and found a man dead in the garage.
Hermosa Beach police and the sheriff's SWAT team responded to the home in the 600 block of 11th Street around 9:30 p.m. Sunday and found a man dead in the garage, the department said. Hermosa Beach Police Department.
According to police, the situation began around 3:20 a.m. Sunday when officers responded to a call about an unknown problem and heard a woman screaming near the scene.
When police arrived, they discovered a domestic dispute in which the man threatened the woman multiple times, causing her and other family members to leave the home, police said. The man barricaded himself inside and refused to contact police.
Los Angeles County firefighters were on scene around 3:30 p.m. and authorities evacuated surrounding homes. Firefighters cautiously entered the home because the man was armed.
At 4:50 p.m. the garage was engulfed in flames following the explosion. According to authorities, the fire spread to a private home and continued to spread throughout the building.
Because there was a possibility that an armed suspect had barricaded himself inside, firefighters took a defensive position outside the home to protect surrounding buildings.
The family's dog was rescued during the incident and escaped from the house along with others, police said.
After the body was found and the house was evacuated, the fire department was able to put out the fire.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been clarified. LACoFd investigators are still investigating the cause of the fire.
