Samsung Galaxy S24 Could Match This Innovative Pixel 8 Pro Feature
With the promise of seven years of software and security updates since the launch of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, Google has challenged other Android manufacturers. Samsung is ready to tackle the support window for its next flagship, but there is still a deal.
Speaking with SamMobile's Adnan Faruqi at this month's Samsung Developer Conference, Shin-Chul Baek (Principal Engineer and Technical Program Manager in the Security Group) discussed some speculation about Samsung's plans to provide long-term support for your Android devices.
While he couldn't talk about software updates for the new version of Android, he was open to internal discussions about security updates. Currently, Samsung mobile phones offer five years of security support (along with four versions of Android):
"[Ona] mentions that Samsung also shares the vision of longer device support and is willing to extend beyond the current five-year support period, given the new upcoming regulations."
While Google now offers seven years of security updates, Samsung has few updates to match that number. While there are many factors that go into this combination of software and hardware, one notable element is the support provided by the chipset.
Just as it will be easier for Google to maintain the mobile Tensor chipset, Samsung should also have access to the technical information needed to keep Exynos devices up to date until 2030. Support for Snapdragon-based phones is partly because Qualcomm continues to offer similar subsidies for popular system-on-a-chip variants.
As Google pushes its seven-year statement, Samsung (and others) will be looking to match the offer. All eyes are on the upcoming launch of the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 Ultra to see if the South Korean company can hold its own.
