Meta Targeting 2025 For Glasses With ‘viewfinder Display And Neural Interface Smartwatch

A new leak tonight has revealed the Meta roadmap for VR/MR headsets and AR glasses, with 2025 as the big year.

According to The Verge, the Matter Reality Lab department held an internal presentation on Tuesday detailing the upcoming material. Before smart glasses, this fall will see the second generation of Ray-Ban Stories, sunglasses with cameras and microphones.

In 2025 (one year earlier), third-generation smart glasses will have displays to display incoming messages, translate text in real time, and scan QR codes. Control will be via a "neural interface" strap, which, according to The Verge , "allows the wearer to control the glasses through hand movements, such as moving a finger across an imaginary D-pad."

Finally, he said, the team will allow the wearer to use a virtual keyboard and type the exact same words the minute cellphones allow.

Neural interface technology (brain-computer interface technology) from CTRL-Labs will also be available in a smartwatch that can be paired with glasses. Last year, Meta released a watch with a removable bezel and almost GoPro-like camera.

The glasses, which have the ability to "display high-quality holograms of real avatars," will debut a second-generation smartwatch in 2027 .

In the short term, the Quest 3 is more expensive than the current model at $399 this year. It will be twice as thin, "at least twice as powerful" and will have a front-facing camera. It will provide streaming and mixed reality experience capabilities for 41 new apps/games.

Next year will see a more expensive helmet called the Ventura, and a high-end "La Jolla" helmet coming.

Looking at the scene, Google is said to be working on a mixed reality headset called "Project Iris" by 2024. However, immediate developments include partnerships with Samsung and Qualcomm. The latter will provide a chip for a Samsung XR (currently unknown form factor) running an improved version of Android.

Meanwhile, Google's AR work is split between its Android and hardware departments in an arrangement that mimics the development of the Pixel phone and watch.
