Oppo Find N2 Flip has arrived. The Chinese company showcased its first foldable phone at a global launch event on Wednesday. The Oppo flip phone appears to be heavily inspired by the square design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 , but with a very different look.

Unlike the Z Flip 4, the Find N2 Flip cover display has a portrait orientation and is much larger, measuring 3.26 inches with a resolution of 720x382 pixels. In comparison, the Z Flip 4 has a 1.9-inch external display with a resolution of 260 x 512 pixels; Last year's Motorola Razr came with a 2.7-inch display with a resolution of 573x800 pixels. In fact, the Find N2 Flip has the largest vertical display of any flip phone.

Apart from the screen, the Find N2 Flip has all the features you would expect from a 2023 foldable phone. There are two rear cameras: one with a 50 megapixel sensor, a 32 megapixel front camera, a lens. processor (MediaTek Dimensity 9000 Plus) and fast-chargeable 4300 mAh battery up to 44 W. No IP rating for water and dust resistance. In comparison, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is rated IPX8, which means it can withstand immersion in water, but no protection against dust. Currently, no foldable phone is suitable for dust protection.

The Find N2 Flip will be available for pre-order in the UK from today, starting at £849, approximately $1,020 and AU$1,480. There are currently no plans for a US release, but the phone will arrive in select stores in Europe and Asia.

The Find N2 Flip's front screen is large

It's commendable because Oppo dared to change the design of the foldable cellphone display. While it's not as impressive as the landscape display of the Galaxy Z Flip 4, I think the Find N2 Flip's surface display has the potential for more functionality. After all, it has the largest vertical display of any foldable phone.

In the few hours I spent with the phone, I found the Find N2 Flip's overlay display useful for quickly scanning the weather without opening the phone. All I have to do is swipe left and my preferred widgets appear on the cover screen, including the camera, timer, weather, and voice recorder. I can get notifications but can't see my plans. I wish Oppo added a Google Calendar widget to the home screen.

Navigation is simple. On the home screen, you can swipe down to see the dashboard, swipe up to see the list of notifications, and swipe left to see the various widgets.

The camera widget lets you use the cover screen as a viewfinder, meaning you can take selfies and portraits and even record videos without opening your phone. With a larger screen size, you have a good idea of how the image will look when you shoot it.

Another handy feature of the device is the quick reply, also available on the Z Flip 4. When you receive a WhatsApp message, you can reply from the cover by choosing from a number of pre-designed templates. I also have the option to create my own post template. Apart from WhatsApp, the quick reply feature is available on Slack, Messenger, Telegram, and Line. Like the Galaxy Z Flip 4, it doesn't let you type or dictate answers without opening the phone. You are limited by templates.

As it stands, though, the Find N2 Flip's touchscreen is limited in functionality compared to the Motorola Razr . In 2020, the second generation Razr has a full keyboard that lets you type and select the apps you want on the cover (like Gmail and YouTube) and lets you play games like PUBG mobile. I wish the Find N2 Flip's flip-up screen offered more freedom and usability, but there's definitely potential if Oppo can work around the software component.

The Find N2 Flip has a 50 megapixel camera

The phone has two rear cameras: a 50 megapixel main camera and an 8 megapixel ultra wide angle camera. The Find N2 Flip doesn't have a telephoto lens, so don't expect it to take sharp photos of distant objects. Currently, no flip phone has a dedicated telephoto lens. I took some photos. Images are generally smooth when digitally zoomed in up to 5x. To be honest, you will probably buy this phone because of its scalability. The photos I took with Oppo looked respectable to me. See some examples below.

The Find N2 Flip's internal screen has a slight crease

The screen inside the Find N2 flip is a 6.8-inch AMOLED panel. At first glance, you may not see the notch running across the screen. Sometimes it pops up when you hold it at a certain angle or in bright light. I also feel it when I move the screen or interact with it. For the most part, though, these mistakes don't detract from my experience and are in no way a deal breaker. In contrast, the screen looks sharp, feels responsive, and is bright enough in bright conditions.

The main screen has a refresh rate of 120 Hz, which makes it easy to navigate through apps and scroll through news feeds. This year, Oppo updated its hinge, which according to the company is smaller and thinner, but sturdier than its predecessor. According to the company, the Find N2 Flip has been tested in 400,000 corners. Oppo claims the screen also has an ultra-thin glass coating, which should help with durability.
