New Exeter House And Techno Community Meetups A Hit In The City

The Exeter Cafe has become a regular hangout for burgeoning house and techno DJs.

To date, Sunset Society Cafe has hosted four successful community events that offer budding DJs the opportunity to bring their music to professional tables in a relaxed and supportive environment.

Facebook house and techno group founder Tim Lawton has been overwhelmed by the response from local music fans since launching the community last September.

"It's clear there's a real thirst for musical artists in this community," Tim said at the first meeting of the year last Saturday.

"It appeals to a wide age range from 18 to 60, '90s high-fives and newcomers."

Charlie West, manager of Sunset Society Cafe, quickly saw a hip opportunity after joining a Facebook group.

Charlie said: "A few years ago I had the idea of throwing a party outside, so I joined the Team House and Techno group on Facebook and after seeing the chatter there I thought this cafe would be the perfect place to play. ."

He said last weekend's gathering was the best turnout yet, with 30 DJs contacted for a DJ slot.

"It's a good experiment, you don't have any pressure, it's almost a simulator," said Exeter University final year student and experienced DJ Ali.

For 56-year-old Neil Chandler, his band has not only played techno music in coffee shops, but also commercially at Lawton's Gravitate techno party.

"Exeter hasn't really had a house and techno scene, so it's good to be part of creating an atmosphere in Exeter that hasn't been there before," says Neil.

In addition to creating opportunities for music, Tim says it has excited the community.
