Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra Vs IPhone 14 Pro And Pro Max: Which Should You Buy?
Ryan Haynes / Android Authority
Apple is launching its 2022 flagship, and it's making some interesting changes across the board. The iPhone 14 Pro models in particular are getting a much-needed upgrade to the camera system, and the new pill tier is definitely a conversation starter. If you want the best, pay attention to the iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max. But there's plenty of competition in the flagship space, with Samsung leading the way as usual.
How does the new iPhone compare to the best in the Android world? Let's take a look at the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra versus the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.
Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra vs iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max
design and appearance
The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max cases haven't changed much from their predecessors. It's about shaving off a few millimeters in height and width, and the new phones are a millimeter thicker. There are enough changes to warrant a new line of cases, but not enough to make a difference when you look at the phone from the back.
Move the phone forward and it's a whole different story. Gone is the classic iPhone tier, with the Face ID device tucked into a new pillbox that Apple calls Dynamic Island. It's more than just a level, expanding around the level with the help of alerts, notifications, music controls and beautiful animations. It's a great idea in theory and makes better use of space than anything we've seen before. Of course, we'll have to see how convenient it is to touch the phone to get these alerts and feedback, especially on the larger iPhone 14 Pro Max.
The display device remains the same. You get 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch Super Retina displays with the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, respectively, with an adaptive refresh rate of 120 Hz. Apple added an always-on display for the first time, another exclusive feature of the Pro series. Works with the new iOS 16 lock screen widget to display reminders, calendar events, weather, and notifications. Unlike other iterations of AOD, you see a dark version of the background instead of a black background.
On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra has undergone a redesign, at least compared to the rest of the series. The design language is reminiscent of the discontinued Galaxy Note series with its rectangular shape and curved sides. The built-in slot for the S Pen brings further similarities. Samsung has also ditched the edge-cut look for the camera array you get with the S22 and S22 Plus, opting instead for a simpler look where the camera is almost flush with the back.

Samsung phones, flagship or not, are known for the quality of their displays, and the S22 Ultra is one of the best. When it comes to screen resolution, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra has an edge over the iPhone 14 Pro. With Samsung phones, you get Quad HD+ resolution and an adaptive refresh rate of 120 Hz.
The iPhone 14 Pro Max and Galaxy S22 Ultra are similar in size and offer neither of the most comfortable handling experiences. At least Apple gives you the choice here. With the iPhone 14 Pro, everything remains the same except for the smaller 6.1-inch screen. On the other hand, if you want a smaller Galaxy S22 or S22 Plus, you have to compromise on features such as the display and camera.
hardware and camera
The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Exynos 2200 processor in select markets, backed by 8GB or 12GB of RAM. There's no expandable storage, but if you're willing to shell out the cash, you can get up to 1TB of internal storage with your phone. With a high-end processor and plenty of RAM, the phone can easily handle anything you throw at it.
Surprisingly, Apple has ordered the A16 Bionic processor for its Pro series, while the standard model carries last year's A15. Apple hasn't said whether this is in response to continued chip shortages or another way to differentiate between the two lines. Of course, last year's processor also outperformed the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, and the A16 was only better. We don't know how much RAM is packed into the iPhone, but performance has never been an issue and won't be with the new phone.
Apple's latest processor is only available with the Pro model.
The iPhone 14 Pro has some new features that will come in handy if you're ever in a bad situation. The first is Accident Detection, which automatically alerts emergency services, gives them your location and sends a message to your emergency contact if you've been in a serious car accident. Not having a cellular connection should not be an excuse for not getting help. Apple provides this with the new Satellite Emergency SOS feature to contact emergency services and tell them your location.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra's 5,000mAh battery offers solid battery life considering all the power-hungry hardware it packs. It easily lasts a full day with about 6.5 hours of screen time. It supports 45W fast charging if you have the right charger and 15W fast charging.
We were very impressed with the battery life of the iPhone 13 Pro Max, so we can expect more from the new phone. The main difference this time is the addition of an always-on display, but it doesn't significantly affect battery life. Apple says the iPhone 14 Pro Max battery is rated for 29 hours of video playback (23 hours for the smaller 14 Pro). Unfortunately, Apple still needs to improve its charging capabilities. iPhone 14 Pro Max features Quick Charge, which gives you 50% battery life in 30 minutes, and 15W fast wireless charging with the Magsafe charger.
Switch to the camera and there are some noticeable changes. The iPhone 14 Pro Max comes with a different triple camera setup, but the big change is the new 48 MP main receiver. The 12-megapixel ultra-wide and telephoto lenses have also been improved for better low-light photography. And the front camera is equipped with automatic focus for the first time. We'll have to wait for the test, but we can expect great things from the camera setup of the new iPhone 14 Pro.

Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra's camera has a new look, but it doesn't differ much from its predecessor. The quad-camera system is headlined by a 108-megapixel camera flanked by a 10-megapixel periscope camera, a 10-megapixel telephoto lens, and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens. On the front is a 40-megapixel unit that takes care of all your selfie needs. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is among the best camera phones you can get. But don't be surprised if you jump straight to the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.
price and color
Apple has managed to keep the starting prices of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max the same as last year, although this price lock only applies to the US and China. You do not pay as before in the UK, Europe, India and other markets. In the US, the 14 Pro Max is $100 less than the Galaxy S22 Ultra. However, there are two catches with the high-end 512GB and 1TB storage models.
In terms of colors, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max come in new Space Black, Silver, Gold and Deep Purple options. You get the Galaxy S22 Ultra in Phantom Black, Phantom White, Green and Burgundy colors. Other options are exclusive to Samsung.com, such as B. Graphite, Sky Blue and an eye-catching red.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra vs iPhone 14 Pro Max: Which one to buy?
Samsung vs Apple: What to buy? We ask this question twice a year when a company launches a new flagship product. And the answer, as always, remains the same: It depends. These phones are the best their respective companies have to offer, so you can't go wrong either. It just depends on the ecosystem you want to participate in. But jumping from one to the other is a tough sell.
The Galaxy S22 Ultra and the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max have a lot to offer. This powerhouse has a great display, solid battery life, and a great camera. Samsung has improved software support with four years of software updates and five years of security updates. Apple's software promises are way off. The five-year-old iPhone 8 and 8 Plus will also get iOS 16 this year. The S Pen is a welcome addition to the Galaxy S range, but if the Note series hasn't convinced iPhone users to switch in the past, it won't be a big selling point now.
Both phones have a strong ecosystem that makes switching between the two even more difficult
On the other hand, Apple seems to have released several years of hibernation with the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. "Dynamic Island" is very interesting, although its effectiveness is somewhat doubtful. The camera improvements are great and should make some of the best camera phones even better. But by and large, 48MP isn't going to excite anyone in the Android world. And features like always-on display and collision detection (Pixel phones have had these features for years), while new to iPhone, aren't new to Android.
One major thing I would give to Apple is their choice of sizes. You can get an iPhone 14 Pro Max or a smaller iPhone 14 Pro without sacrificing other features. miss miss miss miss miss miss miss miss miss miss miss miss space space space space
