The Triple J Unearthed Forecast: Ten Artists To Watch In 2023

Ready for clear skies and warmer weather after a wet summer in La Nina?

Hell, we're not. It's time the weather forecasters step aside and make way for Triple J Unearthed, who predict artists will be making waves on our beautiful shores in 2023. That's Triple J Unearthed's prediction for 2023.

At the start of each year, Triple J Team Unearthed selects ten artists they predict will rise in the year ahead and beyond. Those years seem even more relevant given the events of recent years which have made it harder than ever for artists to find an audience in the absence of live performances and IRL moments.

However, we still had our rungs. Last year's predictions worked pretty well, if we may say so. Babyface Mal, Adam Newling, South Summit, Elsie Wameyo, Caroline & Claude and ULA were big hits this time last year. :

So put on your sunscreen, find the right hard hat and check out the 10 artists we think will set the heat in 2023 (in alphabetical order):

With former Good Nights presenter Bridget Husthwaite calling the release "the best debut single of 2022", South Australian Alexia has quickly become the artist we all listen to.

Their debut "Fern" rises into the stratosphere of our minds and hearts with sweet lyrics and magical sounds and is the beginning of a really special project. In early 2022, he started doing some social moments before eventually releasing his single about loving someone so much you "want to eat them." I honestly feel the same way about this song.

While it's still early days for Alexia, she kicked off 2023 with the same momentum she ended 2022 with by releasing a music video and announcing a huge endorsement deal with Lime Cordial. Heavy rain is forecast for Alexia this year, we can feel it in our water, we can't wait to see it thrive.

You've no doubt heard of DICE. four best friends who leave nothing to chance (sorry). Since breaking onto the Western Australian scene in late 2020, this indie pop rock act has garnered enough attention to catch the attention of the rest of the country.

When I first played his music it was great drums mixed with rock guitar riffs all with charismatic vocals that hooked me from the first listen. Whether you love Spacey Jane, Ocean Alley or the local Perth Ra Ra Viper, DICE has the perfect next adventure.

The new year continued their winning streak, already bringing a new single, multiple tours and a worthy Top 200 debut. It's safe to say that DICE is an impressive group that will continue to grow in 2023 and beyond.

Bursting with fearless energy and wild charm, this band has got to be the most exciting band making noise on Naarm/Melbourne punk rock since Amyl and The Sniffers.

Gut Health 5 play loud and infectious post-punk mixed with 70's new wave sounds, which feels like a refreshing dip in an icy, numb sea teeming with life.

After seeing Gut Health at their mini album release party last year, a friend of mine described lead singer Athena as one of the best singers he's ever seen.

Gut health seems to know no bounds. The band members, newly founded in 2021, each have different musical backgrounds, from folk to punk to jazz. They bring a depth of exploration to their music, drawing inspiration from queer rave culture and female vocals.

Promising no-nonsense narration from Jane Fonda, their debut EP Electric Party Chrome Girl delivers a distinctive sound that's genuinely good for the health.

At just 18, Sydney backbone KAHUKX burst onto the Australian rap scene with their single Dew Time, carving a niche for themselves with their smooth flow, sharp vocals and soulful wordplay.

He paints stories of travel, overcoming adversity, relationships (temporary or not) and the new avenues his musical ability has opened up for him through friendly beats in the electronic and dance music arena.

KAHUKX uses all of its best attributes to make a splash in any field, making consistency the best weapon in its arsenal. The millions of streams he's amassed with each of his tracks are a testament to that, but it's the combination of his storytelling skills that make KAHUKX a prime candidate for a 2023 tour.

If you appreciate music in this area, you'll probably agree with me, but the way his songs hook and hold you is addicting. Indeed, with a full career ahead of him and a project already slated for later this year, KAHUKX may well establish itself as a mainstay in the thrill/hip-hop space as Australia's answer to the Mediterranean as a whole . Development.

If there's one artist who strikes the perfect balance between fun and sad pop, it's Medanit. Full of bright, soulful vocals that feel like a warm hug, this artist is one of the most promising acts of 2023.

At 22, Medanith already has a lifetime of musical accomplishments to his name, from singing live with the PNAU touring band, to joining Holy Holy for their Act Like A Version, to opening for The Veronicas in Hobart and his hometown of Launceston.

After winning Triple J's Unearthed Falls Festival last year, Medanit is unstoppable. Raised in his father's music business, songwriting seems to have been a focus from an early age. Even though he has only released 3 songs around the world, don't let that put you off; his song "Friends" is worth listening to. The artist has also teased some forthcoming releases, so we're anticipating more to come from this superstar.

If you've been to Middle Kids shows over the past few years, you might be surprised you've already seen Milkoo. No, he wasn't supporting them, he played bass as part of their concert schedule, and in 2022 he decided it was time to take his own project into space. We're so glad he did, and even though we only have one song with us, he immediately showed his ability to write quality pop hooks.

The heartfelt vocals of Joyful Lim and the synthesizer counter-melodies of Steel Uzi are the tip of the iceberg in what promises to be a big year for Milku.

It's hard not to fall in love with the tractor-tour bus story of WA duo Old Mervs. When Henry and David aren't making vintage music, they're out west, along with other musicians like Sly Withers and Great Gable, who voted Marvs in their most recent top 100 poll.

With a new mini-album and national tour out this month, Old Marvs could improve their Top 200 ranking for "Where Do I Go" in the upcoming countdown.

Following in the tradition of venues such as the Tyne James Organ and St Hall's Tim Carroll, Sash Seaborne is a soloist who appeals to the senses. Just listen to Sacha's latest release, the slide guitar-laced "Receiver," which feels intimate in the Margaret River singer's hands, but at the same time you can hear the entire festival crowd sing along. A wet morning. indigenous

Give it time and Sasha Seaborn will do just that.

If expert opinion still matters in the internet age we live in, we should all listen to London-born Melbourne/Norma Sangeet Sursinghe.

Having racked up countless backstage gigs in the music industry and growing up in a musically wealthy family, his perceptive and intelligent take on club music seems to use everything he's learned to step out of the backstage and take center stage. .

The label founder, CEO, DJ and now producer plays footy, jungle, breakbeat, techno and tastefully references his Sri Lankan heritage in his music. Overall it sounds like the feeling of being behind a velvet rope; Creating random memories of discordant soundtracks on the dance floor and smoky passages in the dark night.

In 2020, a discreet phone video of a teenage girl spitting on the bars of an office chair in front of Onefour went viral on Instagram. At the time, the teenage rapper hadn't released any music, but two years later, Vivian Pete transformed that promising raw material into world-class brilliance.

Sudanese rapper Mount Druitt's second single, "Deception," teases the edgy electronic production with bed-like rumbles beneath its powerful bars. Calm, confident and steadfast, she is magnificent in her fluid nature. Long may he reign.
