Samsung clearly wants the Galaxy S23 Ultra to be the best camera for filmmakers and photographers. Of course, I am not a professional director and do not consider myself a photographer. But after using the Galaxy S23 Ultra for a few days, it's clear that the new camera retains areas where Samsung already excels, such as low-light photography, and expands on those strengths a bit.

The $1,200 (£1,249, AU$1,949) Galaxy S23 Ultra will be available on February 17 along with the rest of Samsung's new line of phones, which includes the $800 Galaxy S23 and $1,000 Galaxy S23 Plus . Like last year's Galaxy S22 Ultra , the giant screen, high price, and compact camera of the S23 Ultra are probably too big for most people.

The name "Ultra" speaks for itself. this phone is for people who want a premium phone. Compared to the Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus , the Ultra offers a closer zoom than most people probably need, a stylus that fits inside the phone, and a large 6.8-inch screen that's bigger than the iPhone 14 Pro Max and Google . Pixel 7 Pro . You may not need these extra features, but after a few days of using this phone, I wouldn't blame you for wanting them.

Samsung really achieves its goal by releasing luxury phones with amazing cameras and giant screens. But it's not perfect. Such a high price is hard to miss, and photos taken with the Galaxy S23 Ultra don't always look as natural as they do with the iPhone 14 Pro or Pixel 7 Pro.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra camera takes a step forward

If you've watched the Samsung Unpacked demo, then you know the S23 Ultra's main camera is a valuable feature. Samsung is adding a 200MP sensor for the first time , marking a technical upgrade to the S22 Ultra's 108MP main sensor.

With the S23 Ultra, you have the option to shoot at 12 megapixels, 50 megapixels, or 200 megapixels, which you can adjust in the settings menu next to the camera's viewfinder. The Samsung Expert Raw app is now integrated with the native camera app on first boot. Although I don't usually edit raw photos myself, this case is very useful for such a phone. Shooting in Raw allows photographers to edit the full, uncompressed version of an image, giving them more flexibility and more data in terms of color and exposure.

The improvements in color, dynamic range, autofocus, and low-light performance seem to be more significant than resolution. In the S23 Ultra announcement, Samsung said its new image sensor is better at minimizing noise and its algorithm is better at improving color tones and details. Samsung places these improvements mostly in the context of video recording and low-light photography, but it's also evident in photography in general. This change is more noticeable to the naked eye than the increase in resolution.

Unless otherwise noted, the photos in this article were taken at the default resolution of 12 megapixels because the 200 megapixel file is too large to display here. You can still see changes in how the camera handles color, skin tones, and dynamic range, even at this low resolution. However, during the test, I took some 200-megapixel photos.

The biggest difference I noticed in a 200MP photo compared to a 108MP photo taken with the Galaxy S22 Ultra has to do with color. The flowers are a lighter shade of orange and the trees look more bushy. The difference in resolution is only noticeable at maximum magnification to see the actual pixel size.

However, the photos below show how the camera of the Galaxy S23 Ultra has changed compared to the S22 Ultra. Look at the photo of trees and shrubs in the garden. While you may not notice it in the smaller embedded version below, the leaves in the S23 Ultra photos have slightly more separation and definition compared to the S22 Ultra, and the tree bark has better contrast.

In the photos below of the sweets displayed in the bakery window, the S23 Ultra captures the strawberries in the top row in more detail.

Those who have taken photos with Samsung phones in the past may notice that the colors sometimes look exaggerated. Samsung has improved this over the past few years, but the Pixel 7 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro still take photos that look more natural overall.

But, of course, does not always mean the best. Sometimes Samsung Exaggerated Color works well and sometimes it doesn't. For example, for photos of people and pets, Samsung Color Accent can create more interesting images. In the image below, my husband prefers the Galaxy S23 Ultra to the more natural Pixel 7 Pro, as it makes his beard and eyes look brighter. But most of all, he likes the iPhone 14 Pro photos because they have the right balance between accurate and bold colors. The iPhone 14 Pro also has more details on the cookie jar it sits on.

However, Samsung phones don't always handle complex lighting scenarios well. When I photograph my husband in front of a bakery window, the images from the S23 Ultra and S22 Ultra look washed out and overexposed, although there are more colors on the S23 Ultra than on the S22 Ultra images. The iPhone 14 Pro is the best in this regard, but the Pixel 7 Pro is also impressive.

Colors in landscape photos taken with the Galaxy S23 Ultra may appear brighter and more exaggerated than on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro. Compare the previous photo of the garden with similar photos taken on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro, and you'll notice that the green tones look more natural. The right side of the iPhone 14 Pro photo looks washed out, but otherwise it would be a better photo because the colors are more accurate. However, Samsung does a good job with dynamic range. shadows are more visible in his photo than in others.

But Samsung is still the king of low light photography in my book. In my tests, the Galaxy S23 Ultra is better in terms of detail and color. The Galaxy S23 Ultra can focus sharper than the Pixel 7 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro. It's also slightly better than the Galaxy S22 Ultra, although close at times.

My favorite example is the photo of my cat Buddy below. While photos are brighter on the iPhone 14 Pro, I prefer the S23 Ultra for more contrast and detail. You can see the fur more clearly by viewing this photo side by side on a large monitor. Galaxy S22 Ultra photos are too soft, while Pixel 7 Pro photos look like they have a bluish filter when I view them on the big screen. It's also another example of how the S23 Ultra's emphasis on color translates into better photos.

Video recording on the Galaxy S23 Ultra has been upscaled to 8K at 30 frames per second (fps), up from 24 fps when shooting at that resolution. Samsung has also increased the field of view when recording 8K video, which is very noticeable compared to the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

While Google provides more natural colors in photos, I felt the opposite when shooting video. In my tests, the Galaxy S23 Ultra delivered more realistic colors and was generally sharper than the Pixel 7 Pro. The iPhone 14 Pro is the closest competitor, but Samsung's photos are a bit more detailed. When testing the video capabilities of each phone, I recorded video at the highest supported resolution and frame rate. These are 8K at 30fps for the Galaxy S23 Ultra, 8K at 24fps for the Galaxy S22 Ultra, and 4K at 60fps for the iPhone 14 Pro and Google Pixel 7 Pro for:

Samsung also highlighted the new 12-megapixel S23 Ultra selfie camera when it announced the phone, which it says separates the subject from the background better for greater clarity. Selfies tend to be crisp and colorful, and I prefer photos taken with the S23 Ultra's selfie camera over all tests of the Pixel 7 Pro. The Galaxy S22 Ultra is comparable to the S23 Ultra, but the iPhone 14 Pro selfies overall have a better mix of detail and accurate colors. Samsung selfies sometimes look unnatural because my hair color looks too bright.

The only exception is very dim light, an area dominated by Samsung. Check out this selfie I took in a very dark cinema with red lighting. Photos of the Galaxy S23 Ultra are much more detailed than others.

As for the rest of the camera, you can expect the same setup as the Galaxy S22 Ultra. In addition to the main camera, there's also a 12MP ultra-wide camera and two 10MP telephoto lenses that provide 3x or 10x optical zoom and up to 100x digital zoom. Photos from the ultra-wide camera are filled with a lot of color and brightness, as shown in the image below.

You'll also get more zoom than you might need on the S23 Ultra, but that might come in handy for people who regularly take pictures at concerts and sporting events. The 100x digital zoom may seem inconvenient, but Samsung offers a higher optical zoom than its competitors. Like the S22 Ultra, the S23 Ultra can offer 10x optical zoom, the iPhone 14 Pro 3x, and the Pixel 7 Pro 5x.

See sample photos below to see different levels of optical zoom.

Overall, I was impressed with the Galaxy S23 Ultra's camera. They are still best for close-ups and low-light shots. Improvements in color and dynamic range are also noticeable, and Samsung fans who have upgraded a phone at least two years old will likely notice a big difference. However, in most situations, the iPhone 14 Pro camera is better, with a few exceptions.

Check out the gallery below for a closer look at some of the photos I took with the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Compared to the Galaxy S22 Ultra, the S23 Ultra has a 200-megapixel camera and other improvements that enhance color, dynamic range, autofocus and low-light performance. Unless otherwise specified, the photos in this article were taken at the default 12-megapixel resolution because the 200-megapixel files are too large to display here. But you can still see the other aforementioned improvements, even at this lower resolution. This photo taken with the Galaxy S23 Ultra is crisp and has great detail and shadowing. The color is punchy, but it looks a bit brighter then it did in real life.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra performance

The Galaxy S23 Ultra is equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor , which is no surprise since Samsung usually uses the latest Qualcomm chips for its new phones. What's surprising is that Samsung decided to customize this chip more than usual for the S23 series. Samsung is calling it the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy, and it's basically a modified version of the processor that's been optimized for performance and power efficiency. The standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is included in competing phones such as the OnePlus 11 5G .

Whether I'm scrolling through the OS, playing games during a video call, or launching the Samsung Dex app to use my phone as a computer, the S23 Ultra feels crisp and fast. I connected my S23 Ultra to an external monitor, connected a keyboard and mouse via Bluetooth, and fired up five apps, including Google Docs, to record this review. I have never experienced lag or overheating when doing these tasks.

The S23 Ultra can also output video quickly, which is useful for those who shoot and edit video projects regularly on their phones. In my tests, it ran 30 seconds of 4K video at 1080p three seconds faster than the S22 Ultra and an average of 10 seconds faster than the Pixel 7 Pro. However, the iPhone 14 Pro is on average about three seconds faster than the S23 Ultra. You'll also get double the storage space of the base Galaxy S23 Ultra (256GB vs. 128GB), giving you more room for your video projects.

The new Samsung phones also outperformed the Galaxy S22 Ultra, Pixel 7 Pro and OnePlus 11 5G in tests designed to test computing power in everyday tasks and applications that require high performance in a short amount of time, such as mobile games. However, the iPhone 14 Pro outperforms the S23 Ultra in a general computer test (Geekbench 5), but lower in a test that measures short periods of high intensity (3DMark Wild Life Extreme).

Battery Life and Charging Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

The Galaxy S23 Ultra has the same 5,000mAh battery as the Galaxy S22 Ultra, but should offer better power efficiency thanks to a new processor. I'll have to spend more time with the phone to compare it to the S22 Ultra, but so far the results are promising. After 12 hours of use, which is equivalent to a full day of work, the battery drops to 66%.

I have enabled adaptive motion and adaptive brightness settings that adjust the refresh rate and brightness of the screen depending on the situation. The always-on display feature is also active, but I've turned on "show by touch", which means the time and date won't show until I touch the screen. Battery life always depends on how you use your device. In this scenario, I took photos with my phone, recorded some videos, checked email, browsed social media, and listened to music for about 15 minutes.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra once had about three-quarters of battery left in the middle of a work day, even after half an hour of shooting 4K video. We are still running additional battery tests on the S23 Ultra and will update this review accordingly.

I also ran a 45-minute test during which I played games, made 10-minute video calls, checked social media, and streamed video; Meanwhile, the S23 Ultra dropped from 100% to 94%. In the same test, the Galaxy S22 Ultra dropped to 91%. The results for the Galaxy S23 Ultra were similar to those of the Pixel 7, which also scored 94% after a 45-minute test. (During this test, I kept the brightness at 50%, left the high refresh rate setting, and turned off the always-on display.)

Like last year's Galaxy S22 Ultra, the Galaxy S23 Ultra has a maximum wired charging speed of 45W. You need to use the correct adapter, which needs to be purchased separately if you don't already have one, as Samsung doesn't include one in the box. So far, the 45W charging speed has taken my S23 Ultra from 46% to 91% in just 30 minutes of charging.

That's not bad, but it would be nice to see Samsung moving forward with companies like OnePlus and Xiaomi offering over 100W fast charging. For example, the Xiaomi 12T Pro supports 120W fast charging and charges from zero to 100% in 19 minutes, according to my colleague Sarina Dayaram's Xiaomi 12T Pro review .

The Galaxy S23 Ultra is Samsung's new top-of-the-line phone. It starts at $1,200 and launches on Feb. 17. It has a 6.8-inch screen, making it one of the biggest phones you can buy. But the real draw is its camera, which consists of a new 200-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera and two 10-megapixel telephoto cameras.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra design, display and other features

The Galaxy S23 Ultra is almost identical to the Galaxy S22 Ultra. It has the same boxy edges that give it a sharper look compared to the regular Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus. This year, however, the S23 Ultra is available in beige, green, black, and lavender. Like last year's device, it has an IP68 waterproof rating, which means it can be submerged in fresh water up to 1.5 meters deep for up to 30 minutes.

It has no errors. The Galaxy S23 Ultra is a giant phone just like its predecessors. It has a 6.8 inch screen which is small. அயேயை அயேயை வேரு யை ய ய ய ஡ ம யர்மை தெ தெ தெ தெ தி ய ஆ ந ந ந மு குய் மாயு மாயு மாயு மாயு மாயு
