Many users of Apple devices that have recently updated to the new iOS 16 have expressed their frustration with the new notification system. The main complaint is that notifications no longer automatically appear at the bottom of the iPhone's lock screen, but at the top below the clock.

“I hate the clutter of notifications and search bars at the bottom of the new iOS. It is not so clear. There's no way it can't be?' Apoorva Govind, founder of social trading app Bestever, asked in a tweet last week.

His post was one of many on social media complaining about the patched feature.

Fortunately, the notification system can be tweaked in a few simple steps to give users a more personalized viewing experience.

The new bottom notification system in iOS 16 is meant to make screens less cluttered and provide a more user-friendly experience. Users can swipe up on notifications to see more messages, then navigate through messages and manage notifications.

However, not everyone is open to change, especially people who are used to older versions of notification systems after years of use. If you're one of those people who don't like the new notification style, it only takes a few quick taps to return your phone to the familiar look of iOS 15 and previous operating systems.

1. Go to Settings.

Just open the Settings app from your home screen.

2. Go to Notifications.

After entering the settings, go to the "notifications" section and click on it.

3. Select a list.

At the top of the Notifications screen, you'll have several display options: Count, Stack, and List. The stack version is the lowest default version that you will already have on your device after downloading iOS 16.

Click List, which will reset your phone to the old notification system.

List view shows new notifications as individual notifications or groups. As the name suggests, it lists messages one after the other. In this design, you can also swipe up on the lock screen to see previous notifications, as older iOS systems allowed.

The new Stacks option shows notifications stacked on top of each other from the bottom of the lock screen when messages arrive. The most recent alert you received will appear at the top and the second alert will appear partially below. The third notification will tell you how many other notifications you have.

In the stack view, users can swipe up or tap the lock screen to switch notifications to list view.

Are these options still cluttering the screen too much?

Perhaps you'll find the Count's design more appealing. This style only shows the number of new notifications in a graph at the bottom of the screen. The message does not provide any notification information, it simply lists a number to make your banner clear.

To learn more about the number display, swipe up or tap the lock screen to switch the message to Stack view.

If you change your mind about how notifications appear, follow the steps above to choose a different option.
